If you are in Chennai and all the generic modern themes don’t quite interest you, here are a few unusual spots that are well and truly “Exclusively Chennai”

1. Theosophical Society

If you are someone looking to explore new horizons for a serene mind, try a visit to the Theosophical Society at Adyar. A society inbuilt by its very own principles and ideas, one can be guaranteed to leave the place with a different perspective towards celestial nirvana or at times the truth of life.

2. Cholamandal Artist Village

Chennai is everything art and culture, and the Cholamandal Artist Village is a fitting testimony to the city’s affinity to it. Since its inception in 1966, the art village has been an art gallery, an art museum, an amphitheatre and everything ‘art’!. 

3. Adyar Eco Park

Life every day isn’t a walk in the park, but a visit to the Adyar Eco Park could be one (Pun intended). The vast acres of this iconic park is a must-visit if you are in Chennai. Being one of you could also feel free to pay a visit to the Snake park nearby!

4. Tirusulam Mount

The mount is one of the very few places that reflects the metro in a different light. Though public entry has been restricted due to its proximity to the airport, a platform ticket at the Tirusulam Railway station between 4 pm – 6 pm, your favourite playlist plugged in, and a sunset to behold – is an experience from yours truly Chennai!

5. Ottiambakkam Quarry

The Quarry is quite an experience altogether. Tranquil green waters hidden away from the music of the metro city, the quarry is a disparate space inside the city’s landscape. Feel free to take a dip, but make sure you know to swim, the water’s deep!

It’s summer again (not that we might have the full freedom to explore around the world ‘#youknowwhatimean) and it’s time to rejoice the season in the good ol’ fashion ways… I might have something that can help you with it, while also helping you cut down on those pandemic pounds. Here are a few cycling routes that can help you revisit the good ol’ summer ways.

1. Poonamallee To Vengal Forest (35 km One Way)

This might not sound like the regular route, but for people who have their residence in and around Poonamallee can relate to this one. An early morning ride, even in the middle of summer, is quite blissful – with lush greens on either side and a pinch of early morning summer mist to keep you at peace. 

2. Vandalur To Kumizhi Lake (16.9 Kms One Way)

For those on the other side of the city; (somewhere or anywhere near Chengalpattu and its surroundings), Vandalur – Kumizhi Lake could be IT. A highway and a hotspot for cycling enthusiasts, the silence and the everlasting open straights roads is your one-way ticket to a biker’s paradise.

3. Puzhal To Seemavaram Dam (12.1 Kms One Way)

Meanwhile, on the far northern side of the city, there lies a cycling route, one that calls only the toughest and the hardest of the cyclists in the city. The route has its own ‘Mad Max’ vibe but what awaits at the end of the destination is something that would be more than what you expect. 

Without any further ado, just put on your shoes, equip your fitness gear, switch onto Strava and get set for a worthwhile cycling ride.

Chicken Keema Idli: The South Indian Staple With A Twist

Idli is one south indian staple breakfast that no one can say no to. These soft, spongy and puffed rice buns have been everyone’s favorite breakfast recipe for ages. What’s more interesting is that this widely popular dish is a huge craze all over the world. It’s just one simple dish that can be fusioned in so many different and innovative ways! One such tempting idli recipe is The Chicken Keema Idli. Yes, chicken lovers, you read that right! Let’s not make your taste buds crave more and get started with how the recipe is prepared.

Cook Time: 30 – 35min
Serves: 4

Ingredients

1. Idli Batter

-Urad Dal

-Blended Rice

-Salt

-Oil To Grease

2. Keema

-Oil

-Cumin seeds

-Chopped Onions

-Chopped Green Chillies

-Ginger Garlic Paste

-Turmeric Powder 

-Chilli Powder

-Garam Masala

-Cumin Powder

-Chopped Tomato

-Minced Chicken

-Fresh coriander

-Water

How To Prepare The Chicken Keema Idli?

For Idli batter

  • Soak urad dal the night before
  • Next day blend the soaked dal, rice and salt into a blender
  • Idli batter is ready

For Chicken Keema

  • Heat oil in a pan and add in some cumin seeds. 
  • Once the seeds start to crackle, add chopped onions and cook until brown in colour.
  • Add in the ginger-garlic paste along with some green chillies and stir the mixture for 15-20 mins.
  • Add some turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala and cumin powder for the flavour.
  • Then add some tomatoes and water. Keep mashing together until the gravy is smooth and thick.
  • Time to add the minced chicken so that the spices get combined properly.
  • Let the chicken cook for at least 15-20 mins.
  • Lastly, top it with some fresh coriander leaves, allowing the keema to cool.

Now Put It Together!

  • Grease the idli maker moulds with some oil.
  • Pour over one layer of idli batter into the mould.
  • Add in the chicken keema on the first layer of batter.
  • Now add the second layer of batter over the keema.
  • Leave the idlis to steam for 10-15 minutes.
  • Chicken Keema Idli is ready to be served with some chutney and sambar.
